History of Rani Velu Nachiyar

Queen Velu Nachiyar (January 3, 1730-December 25, 1796) was a queen of the estate of Sivaganga from c. 1780–90. She was the very first queen in India to fight against British imperial forces. In Tamil she considered to be Veeramangai ('Brave Woman').

Velu Nachiyar, was an Indian female warrior from Tamil Nadu, India. Velu was born a princess, in 1730, the only daughter of the King of Ramnad in Tamil Nadu. Being the child, and heir, Velu was raised like a prince, and trained in the art of warfare. Velu learned and was very good in warfare, and very good using the available weapons of that time period.

The struggling story of Velu Nachiyar

At the tender age of 16, this warrior princess was married to Muthuvadugananthur Udaiyathevar, of Sivagangai. Their daughter was born, and both Valu, now a queen and her husband reigned for about 22 years, then the British killed her husband during a battle. Velu, and her daughter Vellachi left. Both mother and daughter lived in Virupachi, Dindigul under the protection of Nepala Goyakar. She formed an armed force during this period and requested an alliance with Gopala Nayaker and Hyder Ali with a view to attacking the British, whom she successfully fought in 1780.
Velu is the first person to think about suicide attacks. She successfully planned a suicide attack when Velu Nachiyar found the place where the British stored their ammunition. Nachiyar was one of the few rulers to reclaim her empire, ruling it for another ten years. Her daughter Vellacci inherited the Throne in 1790. The brave Indian warrior, after setting herself in fire, jumped into the British ammunition storage depot and blew into smithereens, surprising and defeating the British.

Queen Velu Nachiyar has been honored thorough the years, with a song, a ballet, a stamp, and a bronze statue in Tamil Nadu.
